Boom Lift, Man Lift, Cherry Picker or MEWP?
One Family of Machines, Four Names: What Each Means, the Main Types, and the Checks UAE Sites Ask For
The Short Answer
A boom lift is a machine that lifts people and their tools on a platform, often called the basket, at the end of a boom, so they can work safely at height. On UAE sites the same machine is just as often called a man lift (or manlift), and many people know it as a cherry picker. MEWP, short for mobile elevating work platform, is the formal term used in safety standards and operator training, and it covers every powered platform that lifts people.
So when a site engineer asks for a man lift, a buyer searches for a boom lift and the HSE plan says MEWP, they are usually talking about the same machine.
Four Names, One Family
| Name | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Man lift / manlift | Any powered platform that lifts people; on UAE sites, nearly always a boom lift.Heard from site teams across the Gulf |
| Boom lift | A platform on a telescopic or articulating boom.Used by manufacturers and rental companies |
| Cherry picker | An informal name for a boom-type lift, especially a truck-mounted one.Everyday speech |
| MEWP | Mobile elevating work platform: boom lifts, scissor lifts and vertical masts.Standards (ISO 16368, EN 280, ANSI A92), IPAF training, HSE plans |
| Aerial work platform | The same family in North American usage, also “aerial lift”.Spec sheets and US manufacturers |
What People in the UAE Actually Search For
We looked at Google search data for Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman to see which name people use when they look for this machine.
| Search term | Searches per month |
|---|---|
| man lift / manlift | about 1,300 |
| boom lift | about 1,240 |
| cherry picker | about 810 |
| mewp | about 370 |

Two things stand out. First, the name is changing. Among searches that mention renting or hiring, “manlift” made up 60% from September 2022 to August 2023; in the latest 12 months it is 32%, and “boom lift” has taken its place. Second, only about 12% of all searches include “rent” or “hire” at all: most people search for the machine first and sort out the hire later. Searches in Arabic are under 1% of the total.
The Main Types of Boom Lift
Articulating (Knuckle) Boom Lift
An articulating boom has jointed sections that bend, so the basket can go up and over an obstacle, such as a wall, a canopy, parked cars or pipework, and reach the work from above. It is the more compact choice for congested sites. Our 18 m articulating boom lift, a JLG 510AJ, has a 17.81 m working height and 9.48 m of horizontal outreach.
Telescopic (Straight) Boom Lift
A telescopic boom extends in a straight line, which gives the most height and sideways reach from one spot. It is the usual pick for open sites, tall facades and steelwork. Our 22 m telescopic boom lift, a JLG 660SJ, has a 22.0 m working height and 17.40 m of outreach.
For a side-by-side comparison, see telescopic vs articulated boom lifts.
Other Machines in the MEWP Family
Truck-mounted lifts, the classic cherry picker truck, drive on the road and set up quickly for street lighting, signs and utility work. Tracked “spider” lifts are light and narrow for atriums and soft ground. Scissor lifts go straight up only (see scissor lift vs boom lift). We hire self-propelled diesel boom lifts only, so these are worth knowing about but are not machines we supply.
How to Read a Boom Lift Spec Sheet
- Working height vs platform height. Platform height is the floor of the basket; working height adds about 2 m for the operator’s reach. The JLG 660SJ has a 20.02 m platform height and a 22.0 m working height. When someone asks for “a 22 m boom”, they almost always mean working height.
- Horizontal outreach. How far the basket reaches sideways from the machine. On facades, over landscaping or across a road, this is often the number that decides the machine.
- Up-and-over clearance. On an articulating boom, the height of the obstacle the boom can reach over before coming down to the work.
- Platform capacity. The total weight of people, tools and materials allowed in the basket: 230 kg on both machines above. Check it before loading glass, pipe or heavy fixings.
- Machine weight. Diesel boom lifts in the 16–22 m range weigh roughly 7 to 12 tonnes. Check slabs, ramps, basement roofs and soft ground before delivery.
- Wind rating. Most outdoor-rated MEWPs are rated to 12.5 m/s (45 km/h). Above the rated speed, work stops: check the decal on the machine.

Which Boom Lift for Which Job?
| Job | Usually the right machine |
|---|---|
| Facade cleaning, glazing and cladding | Telescopic for straight reach up a clear facade; articulating where canopies, setbacks or planting are in the way. More in boom lifts for facade cleaning. |
| Warehouse MEP, lighting and racking | Articulating, to reach up and over ducts, pipework and racking. More in boom lifts for warehouse and MEP work. |
| Steel erection, signage and billboards | Telescopic, for height and outreach from a single position. |
| Palm and tree trimming | Articulating, to reach over planting and into the canopy. |
UAE Site Checklist Before the Lift Arrives
- A current third-party inspection (TPI) certificate. Most main contractors and free-zone sites check it at the gate. Ask for a copy before delivery and check the expiry date.
- A trained operator. On a bare (dry) hire the operator is yours. There is no single UAE-wide boom lift licence: most sites accept an IPAF PAL card (category 3b covers mobile booms) or an operator certificate from an accredited third-party body, and some sites set their own rules, so check your HSE plan.
- Harness and lanyard. In a boom lift, wear a full-body harness with a short lanyard clipped to the basket’s anchor point.
- Ground and access route. Firm, level ground; spreader plates on soft ground; and a check of slab loads, ramp gradients, gate widths and overhead cables on the way in.
- Wind and heat. Stop work above the machine’s rated wind speed. Every summer, from 15 June to 15 September, outdoor work in direct sun stops between 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM, so plan platform time around the midday break.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a man lift the same as a boom lift?
Usually, yes. “Man lift” is the everyday site name for a machine that lifts people to work at height, and on UAE sites it nearly always means a boom lift. Strictly speaking, any powered platform that lifts people counts.
Why is a boom lift called a cherry picker?
The name is usually traced to fruit orchards, where similar machines lifted pickers into the trees. Today it is an informal name for boom-type lifts, especially truck-mounted ones.
What does MEWP stand for?
Mobile elevating work platform. It is the term used in ISO 16368, EN 280 and the ANSI A92 standards and in IPAF operator training, and it covers boom lifts, scissor lifts and vertical masts.
What licence do I need to operate a boom lift in the UAE?
There is no single UAE-wide licence. Most sites accept an IPAF PAL card (category 3b covers mobile booms) or an operator certificate from an accredited third-party body, and some sites set their own requirements. Check your site’s HSE plan before the machine arrives.
What is the difference between working height and platform height?
Platform height is the floor of the basket. Working height adds about 2 m for the operator’s reach, so a 22 m boom lift has a platform height of about 20 m.
