The Short, Honest Answer

A scissor lift and a boom lift both get workers up in the air, but they are built for different jobs — and picking the wrong one wastes money and stalls work. Before anything else, here is the honest part: we specialise in telescopic boom lifts and we do not stock scissor lifts. Our fleet is diesel 4×4 telescopic booms from 16m to 26m working height. So when this guide says a scissor lift is the right tool for a particular job, we are telling you we are not your supplier for that one — and we would rather say so than sell you the wrong machine.

The quick version: choose a scissor lift when the work is indoors on a flat, level slab and you only need to go straight up — for example an indoor fit-out, ceiling MEP, or racking work where a big stable platform matters. Choose a telescopic boom lift when the work is outdoors, the ground is rough or uneven, or you need to reach up-and-over or far horizontally — facades, steel, and open construction sites. That second job is exactly what we rent. If it sounds like your job, call +971 55 692 9829; if you are still weighing it up, read on.

At a Glance

  • Scissor lift → indoor, flat level floor, straight vertical lift, large platform, several workers or materials at once. (We do not rent these.)
  • Telescopic boom lift → outdoor, rough or uneven ground, horizontal outreach, up-and-over access, facades and structures. (This is what we rent — 16m to 26m.)

What Is a Scissor Lift — and When It's the Right Tool

A scissor lift raises a large, flat platform straight up on a folding, criss-cross brace mechanism (the "scissor" linkage). It moves in one direction only: vertically. There is no arm to swing out, so there is essentially no horizontal reach — the platform stays directly above the machine's footprint. In exchange, you get a big, stable deck that can carry several workers plus tools and materials at the same time, which is why scissor lifts are a favourite for indoor trades.

A scissor lift is genuinely the better machine when:

  • The work is indoors on a hard, level slab — warehouse fit-outs, retail interiors, indoor ceilings and services
  • You need to go straight up, directly overhead — installing lighting, ducting, cable trays, sprinkler lines or ceiling grids across a bay
  • You want a large working platform — room for two or three workers plus materials, so the team keeps working without coming down
  • The floor is flat and clear — standard electric scissor lifts run on smooth concrete and are designed for level ground

To be clear: for those indoor, straight-up jobs we are not the supplier. Our machines are diesel telescopic booms built for open outdoor sites, and a diesel engine is not suited to an enclosed indoor slab. If your job is squarely in scissor-lift territory, hire one from a supplier that stocks them — that is the honest recommendation. Where we can help is the moment the work moves outdoors, off level ground, or needs reach rather than just height.

What Is a Telescopic Boom Lift — and When It Wins

A telescopic boom lift (also called a straight boom, stick boom, manlift or cherry picker) raises a smaller basket on the end of a single arm that extends in a straight line, like a telescope. Because that arm reaches outward as well as upward, a boom lift can put a worker far from the base — over site obstacles, across a barrier, or hard against a facade — in a way a scissor lift simply cannot. Our booms are diesel 4×4 units, so they drive and set up on the kind of rough, uneven, sloped ground you find on real UAE construction and industrial sites.

A telescopic boom lift is the better machine when:

  • The work is outdoors on rough or uneven ground — construction sites, yards, and open plots where a flat slab is a luxury you don't have
  • You need horizontal outreach — reaching across a barrier, planting, water or an area the machine cannot drive right up to
  • You're working on facades or structures — cladding, glazing, steel, signage and painting up the face of a building
  • You need serious height — our fleet spans 16m to 26m working height, covering most low- and mid-rise access work
  • The site is open and ventilated — diesel power suits outdoor air, giving long run-time without recharging

This is the work our fleet is built for. Our 16m, 20m, 22m and 26m telescopic diesel 4×4 booms carry a platform capacity of roughly 227–230 kg and reach true working heights of 16.09m, 20.47m, 22.02m and 26.38m respectively. If you specifically need to reach up and over an obstacle rather than in a straight line, that is a different boom type again — see our honest comparison of telescopic vs articulated boom lifts.

Scissor Lift vs Telescopic Boom Lift: Side by Side

  • Reach type: Scissor lift is vertical only — straight up, no horizontal reach. Telescopic boom reaches up and outward in a straight line.
  • Best terrain: Scissor lift needs a flat, level, hard floor (usually indoors). Telescopic diesel 4×4 boom handles rough, uneven and sloped outdoor ground.
  • Working height: Both come in tall versions; our telescopic fleet covers 16.09m, 20.47m, 22.02m and 26.38m of working height.
  • Platform & footprint: Scissor lift gives a large deck for several workers and materials over a compact footprint. A boom gives a smaller basket (capacity ~227–230 kg on our fleet) but places it far from the base.
  • Environment: Scissor lifts are usually electric for enclosed indoor use; our booms are diesel for open, ventilated outdoor sites.
  • Typical jobs: Scissor lift — indoor ceilings, racking, fit-outs. Boom — facades, steel, outdoor construction and maintenance.

None of this is about one machine being "better" — it is about matching the tool to the site. Once you know your job is a boom-lift job, the next decision is size: our guide to choosing a boom lift size walks through working height, outreach and access width.

How to Choose for a UAE Site

On real Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman sites the decision usually comes down to three quick questions:

  • Indoors or outdoors? Enclosed indoor slab → scissor lift (not us). Open, ventilated outdoor site → telescopic diesel boom (us).
  • Flat floor or rough ground? Smooth level concrete → a scissor lift is comfortable. Sand, hardcore, kerbs or slopes → a 4×4 boom is built for it.
  • Straight up, or up-and-out? Purely vertical over a big platform → scissor lift. Any horizontal reach, facades, or over-obstacle access → boom lift.

If your answers land you on a scissor lift, hire from a supplier that stocks them — we will not pretend otherwise. If they land you on a boom, we rent telescopic diesel 4×4 machines across Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman on a bare-rental basis, with a minimum hire of one week (weekly, monthly or long-term — the longer the term, the better the value). You supply your own certified operator; we deliver a tested, certified machine ready to work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you rent scissor lifts?

No. We specialise in telescopic diesel 4x4 boom lifts from 16m to 26m and do not stock scissor lifts. A scissor lift is the right tool for indoor work on a flat, level slab where you only need to go straight up. Our diesel booms suit open, ventilated outdoor sites with rough or uneven ground and jobs that need horizontal outreach or up-and-over access. If a scissor lift is genuinely what your job needs, we will tell you honestly rather than send the wrong machine.

What is the difference between a scissor lift and a boom lift?

A scissor lift raises a large platform straight up on a folding cross-brace mechanism — vertical lift only, no horizontal reach, best on flat level ground. A boom lift raises a smaller basket on the end of a long arm, so it can reach outward horizontally as well as up. A telescopic boom lift extends that arm in a straight line for maximum outreach and height on open sites.

Which is better for outdoor work, a scissor lift or a boom lift?

For most outdoor UAE work a telescopic boom lift is the better choice. Diesel 4x4 booms drive on rough, uneven or sloped ground, reach far horizontally over site obstacles, and access facades and steel structures. Standard electric scissor lifts are built for flat indoor slabs and struggle on uneven outdoor ground. That is why our outdoor fleet is telescopic booms.

Can a boom lift reach straight up like a scissor lift?

Yes, a boom lift can raise its basket straight up, but it does not give the same large, stable platform or the same working footprint directly overhead that a scissor lift does. If your task is a straight vertical lift on a flat indoor floor with several workers and materials on one platform, a scissor lift is usually the better tool. If you need to reach out, over or around obstacles on outdoor ground, a telescopic boom lift wins.

Need a Telescopic Boom Lift?

If your job is outdoors, on rough ground, or needs reach as well as height, we can help. We rent telescopic diesel 4×4 boom lifts — 16m to 26m working height, delivered across Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman, minimum hire one week. Tell us your working height, the horizontal reach to the work, and the ground conditions, and we'll match the right machine.
